FAQ

Backbone Landscape Partner is an established profit or non-profit organization that focuses on land, forestry, and other agroforestry-related issues.

Its primary responsibility is to discover and support the Champion’s efforts on implementing bamboo village projects by providing three pillars: Landscape Coordinator, Village Facilitator, and Technical Facilitator.

A Backbone Landscape Partner can have more than one Champion if they oversee multiple bamboo villages, which means they can provide access to over 2,000 hectares of land.

Champions are local individual or organization from the bamboo villages responsible for implementing and overseeing the bamboo village initiative and the sustainable bamboo forestry system. Only one Champion assigned for each bamboo village.

During the champion activation phase:

  • Champions are required to conduct a comprehensive analysis, including field GIS and rapid rural appraisal.
  • Champions must also assess and identify 200 households that meet the criteria for bamboo village cooperative membership.
  • Champions are responsible for convening these households and explaining the 12-step bamboo forest overview meeting, outlining the sustainable bamboo forestry system.
  • Additionally, champions must create four essential documents: an operational plan, a business plan, a benefit-sharing plan, and a tenurial plan.
  • Backbone Landscape Partner must be a profit or a Non-Profit Organization that focuses on land, forestry, and other agroforestry-related issues.
  • A Champion is a member of the bamboo farmers’ collective, which is composed of a minimum of 200 households in each bamboo village, and primarily oversees the management functions.
  • Bamboo farmers are collective members from a minimum of 200 households who work on 2,000 hectares of land in a single bamboo village.

The 2,000 hectares of land is not necessarily situated in a single contiguous area. The land, whether assembled sporadically, should encompass 2,000 hectares within a single cooperative system or under one Backbone Landscape Partner.

It will be the responsibility of the Champion, in collaboration with the Backbone Landscape Partner, to identify potential business sectors that can serve as off-takers for their bamboo produce, initiate contact, and propose a cooperative scheme, as a part of the business plan.

Any native to the area is acceptable, especially if there’s already existing bamboo within or nearby. However, it is also possible to start from a nursery and plant the specific bamboo species needed by the market or industry.

  • If the project starts with a bamboo nursery program, the bamboo will be ready to be harvested in 7 years.
  • If the village already has existing bamboo clumps, they can be harvested directly using the sustainable bamboo forestry system once the business plan has been approved, is ready for implementation, and the off-takers are prepared to make purchases.

Please provide details regarding the infrastructure within the proposal, the Risk and Compliance Committee will conduct the assessment. Please include some alternative solutions to address these issues.
